They must withstand the crane's own weight, the weight of the load being lifted, and various impacts and frictional forces generated during operation.

Port cranes (bridge cranes and gantry cranes) typically operate under high loads and frequent starts and stops. Their crane wheels are usually heavy-duty wheels made of high-strength alloy steel and strengthened through a special heat treatment process to ensure excellent compressive strength, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance.

Forged steel wheels: They offer excellent overall mechanical properties, high strength, and good toughness, making them the most widely used type. Common materials include 60# and 65Mn (manganese steel).

Cast steel wheels: For larger wheels with complex shapes, casting is used. Materials include ZG340-640.

Alloy steel wheels: For heavy-load, high-speed, or high-duty cranes, alloy steel is used to improve wear resistance and contact fatigue strength.

Ductile iron wheels: They offer excellent wear resistance and vibration damping, but are less impact-resistant than forged steel. They are primarily used in cranes with light and medium duty cycles.
